Frequently Asked Questions

I feel that Tatbir and walking on the coal give a bad image of Islam.

Comment from Ayaat (01/01/2009)

Dear Ayaat, we hope you are in the best of health and eemaan. You said that you feel that practising the sha'aer hussaini has a bad impact on the reputation of Islam. Ayat 120 of Sura Baqarah states: "The Jews and Christians will never be satisfied with you, unless you change your beliefs to theirs." So, I ask if we are expected one by one to change our beliefs to suit the expectations of others, then what will be left of our faith? As Allah (swt) states in the Holy Qur'an, the other faiths will always point their finger at us and label our faith as "backward" or "outdated". The West has shown exactly this reaction with Hijaab. Does that mean that we should eradicate Hijaab from our practices? If you feel that this point does not answer your question, then please write back.

Striking the head with a blade and zangir harms the body. How comes your website says that the Maraja say it's safe. What explanation do you have?

Question from Haider (03/01/2009)

Salams brother, thank you for your good question. Just the same way that fasting is wajib but haraam for people who are ill or suffer from a specific condition, or just the same way that wudhoo is compulsory and must be performed by all Muslims before each prayer but if water will cause harm to the body (for example if the body has deep wounds) then this wajib action becomes haraam to perform. Tatbir and Zanjir are also the same i.e. if someone is suffering from a condition that would be affected by these actions, then the action become haraam for them and should not be performed.
